After installing the program on the network server, portions need to be installed on each workstation.  During the primary setup, a special program was installed in the Taxprep\TY08\Setup\ directory (folder).  This program is named wssetup.exe and is used as the primary setup for every workstation. Each workstation needs to be mapped to the server’s hard drive holding the Taxprep\TY08\Setup\ directory.  You do not need to take the TaxWorks CD from workstation to workstation. Their are a few ways you can install the program. Proceed through the following steps.

  1. Close all running programs on the workstation, click the Windows Start Menu and select My Computer (figure 1).

  2. Assuming J is your network drive, browse to J:\Taxprep\TY08\Setup\. If your network drive is not J, substitute that letter for J. Double click on wssetup.exe (figure 2).

    • You may also Click the Windows Start button, select Run and assuming J is your network drive, type in J:\TaxPrep\Ty08\setup\wssetup.exe in the line labeled Open and click OK (figure 3).

  3. Once you select the wssetup.exe you may receive an Open File - Security Warning, click Run (figure 4).

  4. If you receive another Open File - Security Warning, click Run (figure 5).

  5. The TaxWorks InstallShield Wizard will now appear, click Next (figure 6).

  6. You will then see the License Agreement. Read through the agreement and select Yes if you agree to the terms and conditions (figure 7).

  7. Now select the type of installation you desire. The Recommended installation will install the program to the default install path which is C:\TaxPrep\TY08\. Although installed on the default path, the server path where the data will be stored will be set to J:\TaxPrep\TY08\ assuming J is your network drive (figure 7). If J is not your network drive, the server path will default to that drive.

      8. Note: We encourage the Recommended install. If you select the Advanced installation please contact Technical Support for assistance at 1-800-843-1139.

  8. The next window will allow you to confirm the information you slected earlier in the setup. If something doesn't look correct you can go back and change it by clicking the Back button. Once everything looks correct, click Next (figure 9).

    • If TaxWorks detects that MDAC needs to be updated, a screen will appear indicating that MDAC must be installed. This is a Windows component and is required to run TaxWorks. Click OK and proceed through the installation wizard. Once completed, click Finish to continue with the TaxWorks installation.

    • You may receive a message noting that your screen display does not meet recommendations. The minimum display requirements are 800 X 600 pixels. We recommend setting your pixels to 1024 X 768. Click OK to bypass this message. You can make adjustments later by clicking the Windows Start menu, selecting Control Panel, Display, and selecting the Settings tab.

    • You may receive a message noting that the program requires Adobe Acrobat Reader version 8.0. We recommend that you install version 8.0 by clicking Yes.

  9. The installation process will now begin (figure 10).

  10. The program is now installed. Select Yes if you'd like to open the program now or select No if you want to open it later, then click Finish (figure 11).

  11. When you open the program for the first time on this machine you will need to enter a User ID. These are used to distinguish the different computers on your network. Each machine on the network must have a unique User ID (figure 12).
