The storage location where your client files are stored is called a Data Path. A default data path called My Tax Files has been automatically set to your server path; the default location is C:\TaxPrep\TY08\Data\. Data Paths allow you the flexibility of defining any file path for your client files rather than limiting it to a specific drive letter.

  1. To see your data paths open the Client Selection screen, click on the Edit menu and select Data Paths (figure 1).

  2. (figure 1)

  3. A screen will appear with your data paths. The default location, which is My Tax Files, cannot be changed but you may add other data paths as desired. To do this select the new button on the Data Paths window (figure 2).

  4. (figure 2)

  5. The Database Options for Data Path window will appear. You need to specify a Data Path Name and Location. To specify the Data Path Location press the Browse button (figure 3).

  6. (figure 3)

  7. When you select the Browse button a Browse For Folder window will appear (figure 4).

  8. (figure 4)

  9. You can now browse to the location you would like to store your data. You are free to decide where your data will be located. Once you have the drive and folder selected press OK (figure 5).
    • Note: The data path CANNOT have the specific folder that the clients are stored in. For instance, if the clients are stored in C:\Program Files\TaxPrep\TY08\Data\Default\ then the data path you create would be C:\Program Files\TaxPrep\TY08\Data\.

    (figure 5)

  10. You will now see the data path you selected showing in the Database Options for Data Path window. You will want to make sure this data path is running on the same data base your program is. If everything is correct select OK (figure 6).
    • Note: You can check what database you are running in the support tool (figure 7).

    (figure 7)

  11. You will now see your new data path with all of your other data paths (figure 8).
    • Note: When a new data path is created, a Samples folder and Default folder will automatically be created in the path.

    (figure 8)

  12. In the Client Selection screen you can now select your newly created data path (figure 9).

  13. (figure 9)

  14. You will now be in the path you created and will be able to use it. All the newly created client files will be saved to this location (figure 10).

  15. (figure 10)

  16. You can edit/delete data paths at any time. To do this, open the data paths window by clicking the Edit menu in the Client Selection screen and selecting Data Paths. Highlight the data path you wish to edit/delete and select the desired button (figure 11).

  17. (figure 11)

  18. Selecting Edit will bring the Database Options for Data Path window up. You can now edit your data path (figure 12).

  19. (figure 12)

  20. Selecting Delete will bring up a message explaining that deleting the path will NOT delete the client files. If you wish to access the client files at a later time you will just need to create the data path again (figure 13).
