* The Advanced Installation is for users with special system configuration. We recommend a member from Technical Support walk you through the process.

  1. Close all running programs and insert the TaxWorks CD into your CD-ROM drive, printed side up.
  2. Wait a few seconds for the Auto Run TaxWorks menu to appear. If you receive the following message asking if you want to allow the CD to run active content on your computer, click Yes (figure 1).

  4. Once the Installation page is open, click the link of the appropriate setup that you would like. In this example we will select the Stand Alone Installation (figure 2).
    • Note: If for some reason the Auto Run menu does not appear, click on the Start button on the taskbar and select Run. Type in D:\SETUP and click the OK button. If your CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than D, substitute that letter for D.

  5. A File Download - Security Warning will then appear, click Run (figure 3).

  7. You may receive another Internet Explorer - Security Warning, click Run (figure 4).

  9. The Install Shield Wizard will appear, click Next (figure 5).

  11. You will then see the License Agreement. Read through the agreement and select Yes if you agree to the terms and conditions (figure 6).

  13. Now select the Advanced Installation type, click Next (figure 7).

  15. You may now choose where to install the program. The install path must be set to a local hard drive, it cannot be set to any other type of drive or the program will not function. To change the install path, press the Change button (figure 8).

  17. The Choose Folder window will appear. You may now browse to the location you would like to install the program. The location will show at the top of the window. When you have selected the location press the OK button (figure 9).

  19. The install path you selected will now appear, click Next (figure 10).

  21. Now you may select the server path location. This will be the working/network path for the program and is where the data will be stored. Press the Change button to choose a different location for your server path (figure 11).

  23. The Choose Folder window will appear. You may now browse to the location you would like your server path to be. The location will show at the top of the window. When you have selected the location press the OK button (figure 12).

  25. The server path you selected will now appear, click Next (figure 13).

  27. The Select Features screen will appear. Here you can select the different features you would like to install or not install. Use the check boxes next to each feature to designate if you want the feature installed or not. When you have selected everything you would like installed, click Next (figure 14).

    • Required Files - Must be installed, the program needs them to function. You will not be able to uncheck this option.
    • Program Files - Are files that are neccesary for the program to function.
    • Adobe 8.1 - Installs the latest Adobe program.
    • Excel Viewer - Useful if you don't have Excel and plan on using Data Sheets.
    • Tax Systems - Allows you to choose which Tax Systems (or Entities) you wish to install.
    • Setup Files - Copies setup files to your system so the setup can be run without the CD.
    • SQL Database - Select this feature to install a new SQL Express 2005 SP2 database or configure an existing SQL database.

    Note: Depending on what you selected to install the following steps may vary.

  29. If you selected to install the SQL Database then the SQL install window will appear. We recommend to install a New SQL Server Express Instance (figure 15).

  31. The next window will allow you to confirm the information you slected earlier in the setup. If something doesn't look correct you can go back and change it by clicking the Back button. Once everything looks correct, click Next (figure 16).

  35. If you selected to install Adobe 8.1 you will see the Adobe Reader 8.1.0 Setup (figure 18).

  37. Once the files are done installing, you will see them extracting (figure 19).

    • If TaxWorks detects that MDAC needs to be updated, a screen will appear indicating that MDAC must be installed. This is a Windows component and is required to run TaxWorks. Click OK and proceed through the installation wizard. Once completed, click Finish to continue with the TaxWorks installation.
    • You may receive a message noting that your screen display does not meet recommendations. The minimum display requirements are 800 X 600 pixels. We recommend setting your pixels to 1024 X 768. Click OK to bypass this message. You can make adjustments later by clicking the Windows Start menu, selecting Control Panel, Display, and selecting the Settings tab.

  39. If you selected to install a New SQL Database then a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup will begin (figure 20).

  41. The Install Systems screen will then appear. Tag the systems and states you want to install. You must install System Operations, Federal Universal (Shared Forms) and at least one federal system. After tagging the systems, click Install From Internet to get the latest version of the systems or Install from CD to get the CD version of the systems (figure 21). Once you have finished installing all the systems you want installed, click Close.

  43. The program is now installed, click Finish (figure 22).

  45. If you are prompted to enter a User ID, enter one and click OK. These are used to distinguish different computers on a network. Each machine on a network must have a unique User ID (figure 23).
