Setting up a return so that it can be e-filed requires a few simple steps.

  1. After you have completed the return and are ready to E-File it go to the General Information input screen, check the box to File federal return electronically and enter the PIN information and signature date in the Practitioner PIN program section (figure 1).

  2. (figure 1)

  3. If you have states that need to be E-Filed, click on the File State Return(s) Electronically button (figure 2).

  4. (figure 2)

  5. Check the box under the EF column next to the state you would like to E-File. Under State EF File Type, select the manner in which the return will be sent to the IRS. If you select Piggyback, the State return will be sent along with the Federal return. If you select State Only, the State return is sent along with the Federal to the IRS and is then sent to the State. If the State requires a Direct e-file, you cannot choose any other method and the e-file will be sent directly to the State (figure 3).
